  64. Ghoullog at Cranmore

Back for its ninth year, the Ghoullog, Cranmore Mountain's annual month-long Halloween event is set to scare again. The event will kick off Friday, September 25, and will run weekend nights through Saturday, October 31. Ticket prices start at $27 for the Ghoullog and $39 for the Ghoullog Plus. The haunt will operate 7:00pm-9:00pm on Fridays and from 7:00pm- 10:00pm on Saturdays and select Sundays. Doors for the event open at 6:30pm.

“We're going back to the Ghoullog's original roots,” said Lance Davis, creator and mastermind of the haunt. “Whether it's a scary character or a scene that seems just too realistic, we know how to get underneath peoples skin. We have found that people really don't like being in situations where they don't have control over their surroundings. This year, you'll never know what to expect behind each corner. ”

For those looking for something more spooky than scary, the Ghoullog's Haunted Playground features a unique nighttime experience everyone can enjoy with unlimited evening rides on the Mountain Coaster, Giant Swing and Soaring Eagle Zip Line.

The Mountain Coaster is a two person, self controlled sled, which brings riders on a 3,600 round-trip ride up and down the mountain on a steel track reaching speeds up to 25 miles per hour on the descent. The Soaring Eagle Zip Line fleshes out the Haunted Playground, letting visitors fly 750 feet up and back down the mountain on a seated zip line; the Giant Swing offers up to four people a breathtaking sky ride.

All new for 2015 is the Broken Skull Pub. Located at the Artist Falls Lodge, the fully-licensed lounge will be offering an array of fresh draft beer, including Angry Orchard Cider, favorite mixed drinks and favorites from the grill before and after scares. The Broken Skull pub is open nightly during the event and begins serving at 6:30pm.

Thursday, October 22 marks Local's Night, where Ghoullog tickets are just $19 with proof of residency from Carroll, Coos and Oxford Country residents.

For one night only, October 31, all lights are turned off for The Ghoullog, Lights Out! Each group will be given a single glow stick to navigate their way through the haunt.

An all-inclusive, Ghoullog Plus package is available and includes a trip through the Ghoullog and unlimited rides in the Haunted Playground.

From September 25 through Saturday, October 3, plus Friday nights through October 30 and Thursday, October 22, Ghoullog tickets are $27 and Ghoullog Plus tickets are $39. Saturday nights from October 10 through October 31, plus Sunday, October 11, Ghoullog tickets are $32 and Ghoullog Plus tickets are $44. The Ghoullog is recommended for those 10 and over. All ages are welcome for the Haunted Playground.

Tickets for unlimited rides in the Haunted Playground are $19 for guests under 54 inches and $25 for those over that height. Age, height and weight restrictions do apply, and can be viewed on line at Cranmore.com.

Discounted rates are available for groups larger than 15, when reserved 48 hours in advanced.

Advanced reservations for the Ghoullog are highly recommended and can be made online at www.theghoullog.com or by calling the ticket office at 603-356-5544.

Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Yet, through it all, for the vast majority of people, their minds remain unaffected. There are currently no treatments that fully reverse the affects of ALS nor is there a cure. THE ALS ASSOCIATION The ALS Association is the only non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig's Disease on every front. By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships, The Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure. Learn more about the ALS Association at www.alsanne.org.

  70. AR Gurney's The Dining Room

The Dining Room is a richly humorous theatrical tour de force in which eight performers portray an array of diverse characters as they delineate the dying lifestyle of wealthy WASPdom, and the now neglected room which was once a vital center of family life.

The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast, dinner and any and all special occasions. The action is a mosaic of interrelated scenes-some funny, some touching, some rueful-which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids.

Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Thanksgiving dinner; a daughter, her marriage in shambles, pleads futilely to return home. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.

Directed by Amanda Pawlik (Manchester), with costumes by Lori McGinley (Franklin), properties by Chrissy Howe (North Conway), lights by Kyle Trumble (Lincoln), stage management by Chrissy Howe and Robert Wetherell (Lincoln). With performances by Daniel Adams (Littleton), David Bownes (Laconia), Jim Gocha (Plymouth), John Quigley (Whitefield), Mandy Gennaro (Plymouth), Donna Kerr (Littleton), Diane Nickerson (Ashland) and Barbara Webb (Plymouth).

Performances are May 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. and May 15 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available for purchase at www.jeansplayhouse.com or 603-745-2141.

Jean's Playhouse operates the professional Papermill Theatre and IMPACT Children's Theatre Companies in the summer and fall and the community Playhouse Players in addition to Jean's Teens theatre companies in the winter and spring. Each year the number of walks held throughout the nation grows, as more people are moved to participate.

  73. 12,000 Years Ago in the Granite State

Despite this, little is known about the Abenaki, and conventional histories often depict the first Europeans entering an untamed, uninhabited wilderness, rather than the homeland of people who had been there for hundreds of generations. Robert Goodby discusses how the real depth of Native history was revealed when an archaeological study prior to construction of the new Keene Middle School discovered traces of four structures dating to the end of the Ice Age. Undisturbed for 12,000 years, the site revealed information about the economy, gender roles, and household organization of the Granite State's very first inhabitants, as well as evidence of social networks that extended for hundreds of miles across northern New England.
  74. "Animals With Bad Reputations" In The Gorge
